  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Pinch of salt

Toppings (optional):

  • Fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, bananas)
  • Whipped cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Chopped nuts

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread
Slice sourdough into thick pieces if not already pre-cut.If the bread is fresh, let it sit out for a few hours or lightly toast it to help absorb the custard better.
  • Make the Custard
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  • Soak the Bread
Pour the custard into a shallow dish.Dip each slice of sourdough into the mixture, letting it soak for about 20–30 seconds on each side. Avoid over-soaking to prevent sogginess.
  • Cook the French Toast
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Serve and Enjoy
Plate the French toast and add your favorite toppings such as syrup, fruit, or powdered sugar.Serve warm with coffee, tea, or freshly squeezed orange juice.

Notes

  • For crispier toast: Sprinkle a bit of sugar on each side before cooking to create a caramelized crust.
  • Savory variation: Skip the sugar and vanilla in the custard, and instead add grated Parmesan, black pepper, and herbs. Serve with smoked salmon or poached eggs.
  • Vegan option: Replace eggs with a mixture of almond milk and cornstarch or blended tofu.
