Equipment

  • A shallow bowl
  • A whisk
  • A frying pan or griddle
  • A spatula

Ingredients

For the Custard Mixture:

  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (or white sugar)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt

For the Bagels:

  • 2 2 medium-sized bagels
  • 1 tablespoon butter or neutral oil for frying

Optional Toppings:

  • powdered sugar, whipped cream, honey, peanut butter

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bagels: Slice each bagel in half. If they are fresh, leave them out for a couple of hours to dry slightly (this helps absorb the custard better).
  • Make the Custard Mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt until smooth.
  • Soak the Bagels: Dip each bagel half into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Let them soak for 15-20 seconds per side to avoid sogginess.
  • Cook the Bagels: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter or oil. Place the bagel halves cut-side down and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Add Toppings and Serve: drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and add fresh berries. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use stale bagels: They absorb custard better without falling apart.
  • Don't over-soak: A quick dip prevents soggy results.
  • Mix sweet and savory flavors: Try honey with cream cheese for a unique balance.
  • For extra crispiness, cook the bagels in a butter-and-oil mix.
Enjoy your French Toast Bagel, a breakfast masterpiece that’s crispy on the outside, custardy on the inside, and absolutely delicious!  ✨✨
